East Flatbush is a bastion of low-rise architecture with blocks of attached houses. You never know what you may find as you turn the corner, a row of Queen Annes or a collection of brick Tudors or walk-ups with Neo-Colonial accents. Make that turn at Clarendon Road and Ralph Avenue and you will find the Wyckoff House which was raised by Pieter Wyckoff in 1652. The frame Dutch saltbox is considered the earliest example of its type in the country and the oldest house in New York City. Holy Cross Cemetery occupies most of central East Flatbush; its burials began in 1846 when Manhattan banned graves on the island. Notable ecclesiastical architecture can also be found in the dignified Romanesque stylings of the Mt. Zion Church of God 7th Day on 37th Street, built as a synagogue in 1928. Erasmus Hall Academy on Flatbush Avenue traces its roots back to 1786 but it became a New York City landmark when architect C.B.J. Snyder created the Erasmus Hall High School that became a Collegiate Gothic-styled prototype for hundreds of subsequent schools.
